Last Minute Halloween Costume Idea - DIY

If you’re extremely busy & always on the go, like me, you probably haven’t given much thought yet to what you might dress up as for your upcoming Halloween party. Luckily, I have a hilarious and simple idea perfect for mastering the quick costume complex, great for couples or even if you’re flying solo! I’ve even got you covered with the captions, y’all :) Plus, I can almost GUARANTEE you that you have the majority of these supplies for the costumes at home already! BONUS, both of these costumes legit only cost us $10 total! It doesn’t get better than that!

Let’s jump into it!

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Lovers!

Caption: "There are two kinds of people in this world… and they both love fried chicken"

Alt Caption: "Finger lickin’ good!"

Female - KFC Employee:

  • Red, white, black, or striped shirt

  • Black jeans/leggings

  • Min. of 1 KFC bucket (for head), another in case you want it as a prop to hold

  • Super glue

  • Red apron

  • Red lipstick

  • Headband

Male - Colonel Sanders:

  • White button down long sleeve

  • Light khaki or white pants

  • 1 KFC bucket to hold

  • Red apron

  • Nerd glasses

  • Black bow tie

  • White colored hairspray & face paint

If you’re itching for a hilarious and easy DIY costume this year, search no further! Head to your nearest KFC, I recommend purchasing an actual meal that way when you ask for a bucket it’s a little easier :) After we ate, we explained to an employee that we wanted to create this costume and asked to have two buckets. They were totally cool with it! I asked for one bucket of each size, the smaller one being for the top of my head, the larger as a prop to hold. :)

The next stop we made was to Hobby Lobby, where I found two red aprons easily. I’m certain you can find these in many other places, such as Walmart or Amazon. I have a petite body frame, so I went with a children’s size red apron while my boyfriend wore the adult’s regular size.

We then went to a Spirit Halloween store and found the colored hairspray assortment. We used white, however I think gray would do fine as well. Something to keep in mind though is that you will be spraying your partners FACE in order to get their beard and eyebrows to mimic Colonel Sander’s white hair, unless you think ahead and buy some white face paint as well. Luckily we had some at home that made this part easier than spraying his face with aerosol, haha! That being said, I definitely recommend purchasing a small tube of white face paint AND white colored hairspray for this job. The girl’s costume doesn’t need any of the paint, though! Also keep in mind that you can for sure find these supplies at most places during Halloween season (Target, Walmart, local pharmacy, etc).

For this next part of assembling the costume, I found that Tyler (my boyfriend) actually outdid me! My plan all along was to simply print out the KFC logo with my printer, and stick it onto the apron. Tyler, on the other hand, was extra and actually bought a few of those fabric iron-on transfer papers to adhere the KFC logo onto the apron....ten points for Ty! Personally either one of these options would work, but if you're short on time, I’d just print and stick with some pins! The iron on transfer doesn’t take too long, it’s just whether or not you want to go that extra step.

For my ladies, attaching the smaller bucket to your head is super quick and easy with some super glue! I put the opening of the bucket down so that the bottom surface would be upright. Then you'll take your headband, simply attach the glue and, wa-la! Instant KFC hat! I chose to have the bucket slightly slanted on my head rather than right on the top, it’s totally up to you! Just make sure that you position your headband onto the bucket the right way you want it prior to gluing it down. If you get tired of holding the headband in place while waiting for the glue to dry (like me) I applied a piece of duct tape over the area to keep it in place so I could remove my hand.

There isn’t a whole lot left to do now that you’ve created the costume. If you are planning on becoming Colonel Sanders, spray your hair with the white hairspray and paint your facial hair areas with the white paint to age yourself a bit! I even sprayed part of Tyler’s forehead for extra effect. Here's a behind the scenes photo here:

Now that you’ve done the last touches, it’s time to get dressed! Ladies, put on your black pants (or jeans if you want) and throw on a t-shirt under your red apron. Put some red lipstick on to match it and put that bucket on your head! You’re good to go!! A+ for cuteness!

Men, find your white long sleeve button down and some khakis, grab a pair of nerd glasses if you don’t have any (Party, City, Walmart, etc) and finish the look off with your apron and bow tie. You're set!

Last step: SMILE!! HAVE A SAFE & FUN HALLOWEEN!!

You will for sure be the hit of the party and everyone will LOVE these outfits! In total, it didn’t take us more than 30 minutes to get ready from start to finish, so this is a great last minute idea! It also saved us big on $! Each of our aprons were $3 at Hobby Lobby, the spray paint was $3, the buckets were gifted to us, and other than that we had all the other supplies at home!

I’d love to see if you recreate this look! Leave a comment below and let me know how it goes, or send me a picture! Very excited to see your looks!! I hope this last minute costume idea helps!

Xoxo, Tiffany Rosenberg
